If there’s anything I’ve learnt in the last few months, it’s that you can’t start planning a trip soon enough. If there’s even the smallest chance you plan on travelling someday, start your research now! It took me a few months to decide where to go, what to do and how long for, and once I’d nailed all those questions I thought the hard work was done. I was wrong.
The biggest piece of advice I wish I could have given myself 3 months ago would be, don’t try and move country just before traveling. I got many puzzled looks when I explained to my bank, insurance and health care in France that I used to live in France, then studied and worked in England, and now I’m moving back. But when I told them I’m off to South America at the end of the month, they looked like I told them Christmas was cancelled.
The best however was the doctor at the vaccination center. Simply answering a “you worry me” in the most disapproving tone when after explaining my intended itinerary I told her, no, I don’t speak spanish.
After finally sorting out the paper work, today I packed my bag, and I feel as prepared as I can be.
